Who is Kirill Petrenko – and what has shaped him into the conductor and artist he is today?
Photographer and filmmaker Nikolaj Lund goes behind the scenes with the recipient of the 2026 Léonie Sonning Music Prize, creating a portrait of the man and tracing the artistic journey that has taken Petrenko from his early years as a music student to some of the world’s most prestigious stages.
Through conversations with former fellow students, teachers, colleagues and musicians who have worked under Petrenko’s baton, we gain a closer insight into his journey through music – and into the dedication, musicianship and artistic approach that have shaped his development as a conductor.
