Valdemar Most

Léonie Sonning Talent Prize recipient 2025

PIANIST

With two parents and two brothers who were all musicians, it seemed inevitable that Valdemar Most would follow the same path. However, he seriously considered giving up music in favor of badminton, a sport he also played at a high level. In the end, it was the fear of disappointing his piano teacher that kept him at the keys. Today, he lives in Berlin, where he performs and studies piano at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin under the renowned pianist Kirill Gerstein.

His childhood was steeped in music from every corner. His mother plays violin in the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, his father plays flute, and his two brothers are a singer and a pianist, respectively. When his parents were at rehearsals in Copenhagen, young Valdemar would sit in the concert hall, crawl among the musicians, or be looked after by someone in the orchestra. From the moment he could walk, he could also—almost—play the piano.

Today, Valdemar leads a life filled with practice, concerts, and masterclasses. A scholarship from the Léonie Sonning Talent Prize gives him the financial freedom to embrace every opportunity. A significant portion of the funds will go toward booking extra lessons with his teacher Kirill Gerstein during holidays, when the school is otherwise closed.
