Trio Fantasma

Léonie Sonning Talent Prize recipient 2025

PIANO TRIO

During a Beethoven celebration at Sankt Annæ Gymnasium’s MGK program, violinist Josephine Egede Franyó and her brother, cellist Magnus Franyó, were paired with pianist Merel Beelen to perform Beethoven’s “Ghost Trio.” The chemistry was instant, and their unique dynamic has since been heard at the Copenhagen Summer Festival, Tivoli Concert Hall, and Musikhuset Aarhus.

Josephine and Magnus have played together most of their lives, growing up in a musically rich household—though their parents’ passion for the accordion didn’t quite catch on. Instead, they turned to strings and developed their ensemble skills through orchestral playing.

Merel knew Josephine from school, but not Magnus. Still, music served as a bridge, and a natural understanding quickly emerged.

Due to changing educational paths, Trio Fantasma has largely steered its own artistic development rather than relying on a single mentor or teacher.

Their ambitions are high, though not rigidly defined. They know they want to continue playing together and explore opportunities beyond Denmark. With upcoming exchange programs, logistics will be a challenge—but the trio is used to finding solutions. The Léonie Sonning Talent Prize enables them to attend joint masterclasses and participate in international competitions.
