Athanasia Kotronia was born in Greece in 2000. At the age of five, she moved to Sweden, where she began playing the clarinet a few years later. By the time she was 14, she had composed her first piece. After studying composition at the music high school Musikkonservatoriet Falun in Sweden, she set her sights on Copenhagen. Here, she completed both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the Royal Danish Academy of Music.

Athanasia Kotronia has distinguished herself as a true initiator, working within several associations such as Konstmusiksystrar (Sweden) and as chairperson for Ung Nordisk Musik Danmark, where she will produce the festival in 2026. Furthermore, she has premiered orchestral works at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in 2023 and at the Pulsar festival in 2024 and 2025. She has composed works for various ensembles, and her music has been performed at festivals throughout Europe.

The money accompanying the Léonie Sonning Talent Prize will be used to acquire equipment to continue composing, work on electroacoustic pieces, produce and document works. Part of the funds will be allocated to future projects, and part will be used for lessons with some of the world’s leading composers.
