Léonie Sonning Talent Prize 2012

In 2006, Magnus Koch Jensen won the gold medal in the Berlingske Tidende Music Competition. That same year, he was awarded the Hans Peter Nielsen grant and the Jacob Gade Talent Prize. The following year, he was awarded the Rødovre Music Prize of DKK 30,000. On four occasions he has taken part in the prestigious Øresund Soloist competition, in which he twice gained 2nd prize and twice won the competition. Since 2006, Magnus has studied under Audun Halvorsen.

Biography

Magnus Koch Jensen was born on 2 November 1991. He started to play the bassoon at the age of ten under Dorte Bennike, after which he became a member of the Tivoli-Garden, where his music teacher was Kirsten Thomsen. At the age of 12, Magnus was the focus of a documentary in TV2’s children’s programme ‘Dear Diary’, broadcast on three successive Sundays.

Since 2006, Magnus has studied under Audun Halvorsen, and after two years at Copenhagen Music College’s Basic Course (where he also was awarded a small Sonning scholarship) he was admitted to The Royal Danish Academy of Music, to be followed later by his younger brother, the trumpetist Victor Koch Jensen.

Magnus Koch Jensen has played on several occasions with the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra, in which his father, Jørgen Misser Jensen, plays the clarinet. He has also played with The Copenhagen Philharmonic, and is solo bassoonist in the EU Youth Orchestra.

Scholarship from the Léonie Sonning Music Foundation

The scholarship of DKK 60,000 is to be used for bassoon studies in Mannheim under Professor Ole Kristian Dahl at the Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst, as well as under the solo bassoonist in the London Symphony Orchestra, Joost Bosdijk.
